Yesterday, I spent the afternoon with my 6 year old son Charlie at the park. He loves to play basketball, and I love seeing the excitement on his face when he plays. I was teaching him how to make a layup. Everytime he made one he got excited and then wanted to run around and play a game. I would give him a pat on the back and say, ‘Thats the one! Nice job Buddy!’. Then I refocused him and taught him that he needs to focus on layups until it is second nature before moving on. I coached him to take it slow and learn the motions before going full game speed.
This is a lesson that I learned a little too late in my school athletic life, but one I’ve taken into adulthood. Everyone’s goal is to have a successful career and continue to grow in your field. Don’t forget that growth can only happen if you are great at the basics, and master your role before you move on to the next role. If you think you will get promotions and fulfillment by staying the same and waiting your turn, you will be sadly mistaken. In today’s world, tenure isn’t as valuable as it used to be. The best get promoted and the others get left behind. Accept the reality and work hard on your craft!
Never stop believing in yourself! Talk to you soon 🙂
