I was watching the movie Talladega Nights the other day. I was touched by the scene when Ricky Bobby confronted his father in the street. He told his dad that he lived his life by his Dad’s quote ‘If you ain’t first, you’re last”. His Dad responded with (paraphrased) ‘I said that? Damn Ricky I was high. You can be other things. You can be second. You can be third. Hell, you can even be fourth.’
The lesson that I took away was that we sometimes take things at face value that isn’t credible. Just because a parent, teacher, or mentor said something doesn’t necessarily mean you should live your life by that creed. Be open to taking advice from others, but be skeptical. If the advice doesnt suit you or your ethics, have the courage to discard it.
