“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” -Zig Ziglar
This is one of the greatest lessons I have learned. Zig Ziglar used this line to start off the first speech I heard from him(Biscuits, Fleas, and Pump Handles). He continues to give examples such as:
-If you are a salesman, then you sell a product that solves a problem. If you can sell enough products to solve enough peoples problems, then the will get what they want and you will get what you want.
-If you are a manager, and you can train, enthuse, inspire and motivate your people to be successful, then your rewards are going to be greater.
This was a huge shift in my mentality the first time that I heard it. Like many others, I thought that the way to success was to outshine others rather than support and develop them. I thought that their success was somehow a roadblock in my journey. But you see, that is not the case. The more you support others, the more opportunities will be available for you. The more people that you will have in your corner to support you and be a reference for you when your opportunity comes. You will also have the satisfaction of helping others succeed instead of feeling the bitterness towards others.
I have been with my company going on 11 years. The first five years before I learned this lesson I was promoted a total of 0 times. In the 6 years since, I’ve been promoted 3 times. It can’t be an accident…
